Your Complete Guide to Glowing Summer Skin

Preparing for summer is about more than vacations and wardrobe swaps. Now is the perfect time to give your skin some extra attention. Body care is having a major moment, especially on platforms like TikTok, where full-body routines are becoming just as important as facial skincare. From exfoliation to hydration, people are realizing that glowing skin isn’t just about your face.

As the weather changes, so do your skin’s needs. Adjusting your routine and incorporating treatments like body wraps can help restore hydration, smooth texture and give you that head-to-toe glow just in time for summer.

Read on to learn more about how you can prepare your body for a season of sun.

What’s Damaging Your Skin?

Throughout the warmer months, there are lots of external factors that can impact the look and feel of your skin. Understanding where to pay the most attention can help protect your skin and reduce the impact that the next few months may have on your body.

Humidity and Sunshine

Have you heard of sebum? It’s one of the primary causes of facial and body acne. High humidity increases your body’s production of sebum. When sebum mixes with sweat, it causes more breakouts throughout the summer. The more time you spend enjoying the warm weather and sunshine, the more likely you’ll see and feel the impact.

Extreme Heat and Air Conditioning

Extreme heat and lots of time spent under an air conditioner can cause the opposite effect of humidity, leaving skin feeling dry and tight while also looking dull. Going back and forth between high and low temperatures disrupts your skin barrier, keeping your skin from adapting to the changing temperatures. This can cause long-term issues like chronic dryness, skin flare-ups and signs of aging.

Chlorine

You know the feeling when you get out of the pool and your skin feels tight and your eyes burn? That’s caused by chlorine, one of the biggest instigators of dry summer skin and hair. But just because it can dry you out doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t enjoy a day at the pool!

Caring For Your Skin at Home

When you want to have your cake and eat it, too (or more accurately, enjoy your summer and love your skin), there are a few tried-and-true strategies we love to recommend. If your skin has been feeling a little parched or you’re ready to get into good habits, give these ideas a shot.

Avoid Hot Showers

Turn down the temperature on your hot showers; it’s only making your skin worse! Taking a warm or cool shower is more soothing for your skin, and it’s a great way to cool down and unwind.

Moisturizer

This may feel obvious, but applying moisturizer is essential to keeping your skin feeling hydrated and maintaining a glowing appearance. Make sure to moisturize after the shower but consider applying an extra layer in the morning and before bed for extra hydration.

You may think that a thicker moisturizer is better for extra dry skin, but using a lightweight lotion could be better for your skin barrier. Be sure to apply within a few minutes of getting out of the shower to lock in moisture.

Body Oil

If you’re looking to really hydrate your skin and achieve a radiant glow, body oil is a new product to try out this summer. Body oils provide deeper and longer-lasting hydration by helping to strengthen your skin barrier to seal in moisture.

Sunscreen

The best way to avoid dry and prematurely aging skin is to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays. Using an SPF 30 or higher will noticeably help your skin and prevent damaging sunburns. But don’t worry! Sunscreen won’t prevent you from getting a great tan. (Of course, you don’t need a real tan to look your best — we’re big believers in both loving your natural shade and in the latest in spray tan tech!)

Protective Clothing

It may be hard to imagine wearing long sleeves or pants on a hot summer day, but lightweight fabrics like linen and cotton are great for protecting your skin and staying cool. Adding a cute sunhat to your look can also be a great way to protect your face!
