Cosmetology School Requirements: What to Know Before You Go

You might be thinking cosmetology school is right for you — but before you apply, do you meet cosmetology school requirements?

What Are the Basic Cosmetology School Requirements?

Fortunately, there aren’t too many requirements to enroll in cosmetology school. In Nebraska, there are two main requirements to keep in mind: age and education level.

  • Nebraska requires cosmetology students to be at least 17 years old.
  • Cosmetology school students must have completed high school or have their GED.

Beyond that, requirements vary by school — but here’s another one to keep in mind: the right fit.

The state and each school will have their own requirements for you to meet, but you should have your own list of requirements in mind that the school and program should meet for you, too. After all, you don’t want to enroll in a cosmetology school and then decide after you’ve started that you didn’t choose the right program. From class size to culture and more, you want a perfect match.

That’s why we offer a one-on-one tour as part of our pre-admission process — we want to meet you and hear about your career goals, but we want you to check us out and be sure you’re comfortable with all we have to offer!

How To Prepare for Cosmetology School

Because you can head to cosmetology school once you’ve completed high school, you might be planning ahead for your career once you get your diploma. If you’re still in high school, you can get some good prep in for cosmetology school, depending on your class schedule.

You don’t need to be a chemist, but cosmetologists work with a lot of chemicals, and it’s helpful if you understand the basics enough to be comfortable. And because a cosmetologist’s canvas is the human body, a basic understanding of biology and anatomy can be helpful too.

And everyone, regardless of current school status, can make sure to focus on their communication skills and creativity. Working directly with clients, you need to be able to communicate your ideas clearly — and understand their needs and desires as well.

If you aren’t able to do this type of prep work before starting cosmetology school, don’t worry! Once you enroll, it’s our job to make sure you’re prepared to do yours — and at Xenon, A Stephanie Moss Academy, we are focused on ensuring your success through our cosmetology program.

Are you ready to see if Xenon Academy is the right fit for you? Get in touch today — we’d love to give you the full tour.
